:( what do you mean people don't remember your birthday?! that's not nice

To be fair, I hid my birthday on Facebook—I don't like getting all these notifications from people who won't talk to me outside of the obligatory "HBD!" greeting. I'm not sure the peace I get on that day is worth the quiet dread of realizing less people remembered your birthday than the year before, especially from those who you consider better friends.

Of course my family remembers, though. We almost had a birthday dinner exactly a month ago, if not for my sister being rushed to the hospital the morning before...

well, if it was an emergency, then the intention still counts! I kept mine on FB because I know how much I appreciate the alert on my friends' page. The fact that I forget doesn't mean I don't care or wouldn't spare a moment to wish them HBD (although I appreciate a more creative and personalised way to do so)

That was unfortunate, though. I was ready to treat them!

And yeah, ultimately it's about the non-perfunctory greeting. I guess we can't avoid that, so I just choose who to greet these days. If we talk a lot on a chat app, I'd course it through that instead. I still have a phone calendar full of birthdays!
