The Kingdom sounds really interesting, I'm going to see if I can track it down over here! I love what-if realities in fiction -- if you're a reader, Robert Harris' Fatherland is a great one to take on your next long journey.
The MMFF films are still in theaters, so doubt it'd be on streaming for a while, but I know there will be some overseas screenings. There's one in California, definitely, in a few weeks.
We just did too! A couple of months back. I haven't seen it yet, though.
They haven't really discussed whether the MMFF 2024 films will go on streaming, but if the previous year's is our judge, we should get them around June.
Enjoyed this review, thanks for this! Made me want to see both movies, even though I can't stand Vice Ganda (as a comedian). I'm really excited for the future of Philippine cinema. It definitely feels like there's a generational shift happening in the background, and the newer directors and writers in the game are producing more interesting work. Even cinematography seems to be getting better and more purposeful
Yes, definitely a generational shift. From my vantage point, some of my college classmates and peers are starting to make their presence more felt!
I'd say the bigger challenge is for the "snobs" to accept that mainstream fare can be good and fulfilling too, that "good" film is not limited to what's "worthy" and what has a clear vision of the auteur. Both films (especially Breadwinner) definitely has the touch of the director, but you really see the ensemble effort in both, and I assume the same goes for the rest of the MMFF films this year.
That said, the first half of Breadwinner will not be your thing. I'll say, although I enjoy Vice Ganda's humor myself, I feel they deployed it more purposefully in this film for the most part.

We JUST got the How to Make Millions When Grandma Dies (title? Recent Thai big hit), took ages to get!
